![]() “The following clarification was printed in the Guardian’s Corrections and clarifications column, Thursday October 18 2007. One or other of us has to go.” But sadly, Wikiquote corrected this and reports: He is also said to have something on his deathbed like, “My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. …which is especially true when faced with the many cheeses, desserts and breads of Paris. …which means Oscar and I would have been friends, acquaintances and enemies.Ĥ. “I can resist everything except temptation.” ![]() One should always have something sensational to read in the train.”ģ. “I choose my friends for their good looks, my acquaintances for their good characters, and my enemies for their intellects.” Why be humble when you can be great?ġ. “I have nothing to declare except my genius.”Ģ. “I never travel without my diary. ![]() Second, he loved saying sensational things. I am shocked. Why do I love Oscar Wilde? First, great writer. “That was a very shocking observation, Cordelia Carstairs. Matthew laughed, again as if he was surprised to be doing it. “He’s grown into everything now,” Cordelia said. “Scowly, and he hadn’t grown into his nose.” ![]() “He was a very unprepossessing child,” said Matthew. You are beautiful,” said Cordelia, feeling the imp of the perverse stealing over her. You are young and beautiful,” Cordelia pointed out. I could paint the portrait’s hair blue and see how it looks.” And not only for sinning purposes-imagine being able to try out new fashions on it. “I should like to have a portrait in the attic,” Matthew mused, “that would show all my sins, while I stayed young and beautiful. “I see you go directly for the soft underbelly, Cordelia Carstairs. “I like Oscar Wilde, for instance, and he does not.” “Alastair and I are very different,” Cordelia said. He made my life miserable at school, and Christopher’s, and James’s.” Matthew gave a sharp, startled laugh, before schooling his face back into a look of lazy amusement. “Lucie did say you didn’t like many people.” Because we do feel sorry for ourselves, it's what Genesis is all about.” And it sounds like 'Oh that's so simple', because it's not simple to stop feeling sorry for yourself, it's bloody hard. Use the rest of the book to write down your interesting thoughts and drawings, and that's what the book would be, and it would be true. And people buy this huge book and it's all blank pages, and the first page would just say - ' Stop Feeling Sorry For Yourself - And you will be happy '. I almost once wanted to publish a self help book saying 'How To Be Happy by Stephen Fry : Guaranteed success'. It's an appalling spectacle, and it's so self destructive. But, just occasionally there will be some example of the absolutely ravening self pity that they are capable of, and you see it in their talk shows. I think it's one of things we find unattractive about the american culture, a culture which I find mostly, extremely attractive, and I like americans and I love being in america. But, to pity oneself as a result of them is to do oneself an enormous disservice. And it's so simple to imagine that one is hard done by, and that things are unfair, and that one is underappreciated, and that if only one had had a chance at this, only one had had a chance at that, things would have gone better, you would be happier if only this, that one is unlucky. Self pity will destroy relationships, it'll destroy anything that's good, it will fulfill all the prophecies it makes and leave only itself. It is, to slightly paraphrase what Wilde said about hatred, and I think actually hatred's a subset of self pity and not the other way around - ' It destroys everything around it, except itself '. Self pity is the worst possible emotion anyone can have. More than pride, which is supposedly the number one of the cardinal sins - is self pity. “Certainly the most destructive vice if you like, that a person can have.
